Island Hopping Local Islands: Fuvahmulah & Guraidhoo

A combined trip to the local islands of Fuvahmulah and Guraidhoo in the Maldives offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic culture and lifestyle of Maldivian islanders. Spending 7 nights on each island, you will deeply experience the daily life, enjoy the hospitality of the locals, and discover the natural beauty of these paradisiacal places.

1. Fuvahmulah – The Island of Diversity

The journey begins on the island of Fuvahmulah, often referred to as “one island, one atoll” due to its unique geography, as it does not share its atoll with any other island. With its diverse landscape, ranging from lush jungles and mangrove forests to freshwater lakes, Fuvahmulah offers a fascinating blend of nature and culture.

During the 7 nights on Fuvahmulah, visitors have the opportunity to stay in traditional guesthouses and experience the daily life of the locals up close. You can participate in local activities, such as fishing with the villagers, visiting craft workshops, and enjoying local delicacies prepared by the hospitable residents.

A highlight is the visit to Thoondu, a unique beach with smooth white pebbles that is considered a sacred place. Additionally, guests can explore the famous freshwater lakes Bandara Kilhi and Dhadimagi Kilhi, where they can observe rare bird species and enjoy the pristine nature.

Diving in Fuvahmulah is an extraordinary experience. The island is famous for its encounters with large pelagic species, including tiger sharks, hammerhead sharks, and oceanic manta rays. Fuvahmulah’s unique location in the deep ocean creates an environment where these majestic creatures can be seen year-round.

2. Guraidhoo – The Heart of Tradition

After a week on Fuvahmulah, the journey continues to the island of Guraidhoo in the South Malé Atoll. This island is known for its close-knit community and deeply rooted traditions. Here, guests spend 7 nights in local guesthouses, providing an authentic glimpse into island life.

Guraidhoo is particularly renowned for its traditional crafts. Visitors can attend workshops and try their hand at creating typical Maldivian handicrafts such as weaving and carving. Another cultural experience is attending a Boduberu performance, a traditional form of music and dance that is deeply embedded in Maldivian culture.

The island also offers numerous opportunities for water sports activities such as snorkeling and diving, allowing you to explore the vibrant underwater world of the Maldives. The surrounding waters are home to stunning coral reefs teeming with marine life. Divers can explore vibrant coral gardens, swim alongside schools of colorful fish, and encounter species such as reef sharks, turtles, and rays. The dive sites around Guraidhoo are suitable for both beginners and experienced divers, making it an ideal location for underwater exploration.

In the evenings, guests on Guraidhoo enjoy the convivial atmosphere of shared meals, where local dishes are served, often prepared with fresh seafood and coconut.

As a certified diver, join our daily guided boat dives in small groups. Boat dives typically take place both in the morning and afternoon. In the morning, you can experience two dives at different dive sites, while the afternoon session offers a boat trip with one dive.

Particulary on Fuvhamulah: Tiger shark dive takes place every day and is either the second or third dive. The dive operation is run by the dive center “Shark Expedition”. As Divepoint has not its own dive center on FVM, we collaborate with local centers who are welcome Divepoint divers.
