Which islands can I book a diving package for?

Diving packages can be booked in advance for all Divepoint centers:

  • Meedhupparu
  • Hudhuran Fushi
  • Rannalhi

Do I have to pre-book my dive package?

No, pre-booking is not required. You can also visit our dive center after you arrive and decide on your dives directly on site. Please note that in this case, the 5% pre-booking discount does not apply.

Even if you choose not to pre-book, we would appreciate it if you could let our team know in advance. This allows us to prepare for your arrival and plan accordingly.

General information about Diving in the Maldives

Do I need to be an experienced diver to dive in the Maldives?

No. Every island offers dive sites suitable for both beginners and experienced divers.

The main exception is Fuvahmulah, which is primarily suited to experienced divers due to the often strong currents. Excellent buoyancy control is essential here.

The Tiger Shark dive is an exception, as it takes place at around 10 metres and is generally less demanding in terms of current.

Where and when are the best chances to see manta rays and whale sharks?

The Maldives offer fantastic opportunities to encounter manta rays and whale sharks, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Manta rays:
The chances of seeing manta rays are very high year-round in the Meedhupparu region.

At the other resorts — Rannalhi, Vadoo, Guraidhoo and Huhduran Fushi — the best time for manta encounters is generally from May to October.

Whale sharks:
Whale sharks are also wild animals and relatively rare in the Maldives, so sightings always require some luck.

The world-famous Hanifaru Bay can be reached from Meedhupparu by speedboat. During the season from May to October, our watersports center regularly offers excursions to Hanifaru Bay.

Please note that these excursions are snorkeling trips only, and a minimum number of participants is required for the excursion to take place. They cannot be pre-booked. If you are interested, please speak directly to our team at the watersports center during your stay.

What is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The Maldives can be visited all year round. The climate is warm and tropical throughout the year, with two main monsoon seasons:

  • December to April: The North-East Monsoon generally brings less rain and calmer conditions.
  • May to November: The South-West Monsoon can bring more rain and stronger winds, although there are still many sunny days.

Please note that the timing and intensity of the monsoon seasons can vary from year to year. The effects of climate change are also increasingly noticeable in the Maldives, making weather patterns less predictable.

Compared to destinations such as Thailand, the monsoons in the Maldives are generally less pronounced and reach the islands in a more moderate form.

The off-season can be a great choice if you prefer fewer tourists and less crowded dive boats. It can also offer excellent diving conditions, depending on the location and current weather.

Be prepared for your dive holiday

Do I need diving insurance?

Yes. Diving insurance is required for every diver.

If your travel insurance already covers treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, this is sufficient. Please bring a confirmation of coverage with you.

If you do not have suitable coverage, you can purchase diving insurance from us on site for the duration of your holiday.

For more information, please see our diving insurance information here.

Do I need a medical certificate to dive?

If you are planning to take an Open Water Diver (OWD) course, we highly recommend bringing a medical certificate confirming your fitness to dive. If there is even the slightest doubt about your medical fitness, we cannot allow you to enter the water.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions that could potentially lead to complications while diving, a valid medical fitness certificate is mandatory. This includes, for example:

  • Heart conditions, such as heart disease or high blood pressure
  • Respiratory conditions, such as asthma, pneumothorax or other lung diseases
  • Conditions that may cause loss of consciousness, such as epilepsy or diabetes
  • Other medical conditions that may affect your safety while diving

For experienced divers, we recommend regular diving medical examinations to make sure there are no health issues that could affect your ability to dive safely. According to the recommendations of the German Society for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine (GTÜM), the examination interval depends on age:

  • Under 18 years: at least every 1 year
  • 18–39 years: at least every 3 years
  • 40 years and older: at least every 1 year

If you have a known pre-existing medical condition, a valid diving medical certificate is mandatory and must not be older than one year.

If none of the above applies, you can complete and sign a self-declaration on site before diving.

Do I need to be an experienced diver to dive in the Maldives?

Do I need a visa for the Maldives?

All travellers must complete the free “Traveller Declaration” before arriving in the Maldives. The form must be completed electronically within 96 hours prior to the scheduled arrival time of your flight.

The declaration can be submitted free of charge via the official IMUGA portal:
IMUGA – Traveller Declaration

About Diving with Divepoint

Do I need to be an experienced diver to dive in the Maldives?

No. Every island offers dive sites suitable for both beginners and experienced divers.

The main exception is Fuvahmulah, which is primarily suited to experienced divers due to the often strong currents. Excellent buoyancy control is essential here.

The Tiger Shark dive is an exception, as it takes place at around 10 metres and is generally less demanding in terms of current.

Do I have to do a check dive on site?

No, it is not a check dive in the traditional sense. However, all divers are required to complete an orientation dive with one of our guides at the beginning of their stay.

At Rannalhi and Vadoo, the orientation dive takes place directly at the house reef. At the other islands, we take you by boat to a dive site with as little current as possible.

The orientation dive gives you the opportunity to check your equipment and buoyancy and, if you wish, to refresh your diving skills with one of our instructors and practice deploying your surface marker buoy (SMB).

Apart from these checks, it is a regular guided dive and is charged at the standard dive rate.

How many dives per day are offered?

Every morning, around 8:00–8:30 a.m., we head out by boat for two dives and return in time for lunch. In the afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., we head out again for one more dive.

The afternoon dive is usually at an easy, nearby dive site and is also suitable for beginners. On Rannalhi and Vadoo, diving at the house reef is also possible.

Night dives are available on request.

Why is there an extra charge per tank for the refueling service?

The tank service per tank filling goes to our hardworking staff members who fill the bottles, set up the equipment, and wash them for you. They receive this money directly, without any deductions.

What does the Non-Limit Package include?

The Non-Limit Package is available for stays of 6 days or more.

On the resort islands, you can choose between consecutive and non-consecutive days:

  • Consecutive days: The package is valid for the selected number of consecutive diving days, with no rest days included.
  • Non-consecutive days: You can take as many rest days as you like between your diving days.

The package includes 3 dives per day, plus night dives for an additional night dive fee.

On the local island  Guraidhoo, the package includes 3 dives per day. Night dives are not included in the package.

Is Nitrox available, and how much does it cost?

Nitrox is available free of charge for Nitrox-certified divers at all our resort island dive centers and on Guraidhoo.

Please note that Nitrox is not available on Fuvahmulah. Due to the frequent strong currents and undercurrents in the area, Nitrox offers little benefit there and can even pose an additional safety risk.

Do I always need a boat ride to go diving?

Not always. Rannalhi and Vadoo have a house reef that can be dived directly from the beach. However, the main diving highlights are only accessible by boat, making the house reef a great addition to your boat dives.

The other islands do not have a house reef. Meedhupparu has an offshore thila, but due to often very strong currents, it can only be dived after receiving prior instruction from one of our dive guides. The same applies to Hudhuranfushi, where the house reef is a channel dive and can only be dived under certain conditions and with prior guidance from our dive team.

For all other dive sites, a boat trip is required. Our morning trip includes two dives at more distant dive sites and therefore involves two boat rides.

Why do I need two boat trips for the 2-tank dive?

For the morning trip with two dives, that means two boat trips, since we’ll be heading to dive sites that are farther away.

When is a refresher training dive required?

We recommend that anyone who hasn’t dived in a year or longer book a refresher training dive

When will we visit which dive sites? Is there a schedule?

There is no fixed schedule. Our on-site team decides each day which dive sites to visit, based on the weather, currents and overall conditions, as well as the experience and certification level of the divers.

Of course, we take your requests into account whenever possible and aim to visit the best and most popular sites regularly.

How long does a dive last, and how deep do you go?

In the Maldives, you may not dive deeper than 30 meters or for longer than 60 minutes. The actual duration of a dive always depends on the specific conditions, and the guide ultimately decides whether to end a dive early.

Is it possible for snorkelers to join the dive as well?

Often, our dive sites are not suitable for snorkelers, as the reef starts at greater depths or strong currents can make snorkeling difficult or unsafe.

Our water sports center offers daily snorkeling tours to the best snorkeling spots instead. These tours give you a very good chance of seeing manta rays, dolphins, sharks and sea turtles.

Do I get a discount if I dive with Divepoint more often?

Starting with your second visit, you’ll receive a repeat customer discount, which is tiered based on the number of visits (minimum 5%). Repeat customer discounts apply only to dives and only on the resort islands. More information about our repeater program you can find here: Repeater Program.
